NHT Classic Four Hybrid Tower Speaker

The NHT Classic Four is a formidable tower style loudspeaker. While the Classic Four looks like a tower, it is really a three-way bookshelf speaker (the Classic Three) sitting on it's own, integrated subwoofer stand. This design provides the detailed imaging, delicious midrange and natural sound-staging of a fine bookshelf speaker with the bass and dynamics you'd expect from a first class tower speaker. Provided you use a quality receiver or amplifier, the Four can fill a medium to large room with ease with rich, full-range sound. The Classic Four is perfectly at home in a high-quality home theater or in a carefully configured reference music playback system.

Acoustic Suspension Hybrid: The Classic Four is an acoustic suspension design where it really counts - the critical midrange frequency range. In this section of the speaker, we use the trapped air (natures most perfect spring) in the upper sub-enclosure to control and damp the mid-woofer cone motion. This ensures the Classic Four delivers smooth, natural midrange with low distortion along and high power handling. This sealed upper section blends perfectly with the built-in, acoustically isolated, side mounted 10" subwoofer that provides usable in-room bass response to a remarkable 24Hz. This hybrid design allow the speaker to to deliver accurate midrange sonics you'd expect from a high end monitor speaker with the bass and dynamics that a larger floor standing speaker can provide. In addition, the subwoofer section may be bi-amplified for even more spectacular results.

Four-Way: The Classic Four is a 4-way design (unusual as most tower speakers in this price range are 3-way designs) using a custom designed 10" aluminum cone subwoofer which is mounted on the lower side of the cabinet, on a wide baffle - an acoustic environment well suited for low frequencies. The mid and high-frequency drivers are located proper acoustical environment as well - located on the narrow front baffle like a fine bookshelf speaker on a stand. The driver complement starts with a 6.5” anodized aluminum cone "lower" midrange driver set in a low resonance BMC (Bulk Moulding Compound) frame. The "upper" midrange and tweeter are located on NHT’s proprietary tweeter/midrange plate we call the "Pod". The Pod contains a 3/4" dome tweeter and 2" dome midrange - both with anodized aluminum diaphragms with powerful, compact neodymium magnets. This Pod keeps the drivers in close proximity to each other (and with the lower midrange) which help them act more like 1 wide range driver but with low distortion benefits of a multi-driver system. This combination of quality components, thoughtfully placed in acoustically beneficial location insure the Classic Four will deliver the goods from room to room to room.

The Cabinet: The Four is made with CNC milled and laminated ¾” and 1” dense fiberboard with extensive internal bracing and baffling for rigidity which helps reduce unwanted resonances. The front baffle itself is almost 1.5" thick! Along with the internal braces, the Four's cabinet has separate isolated sub-enclosures for the mid/high frequency drivers and subwoofer sections. The the top front of the Four has variable radiuses flanking the Pod which help to randomize the upper frequency diffraction effects. The cabinet's curved top, gentle edge radiuses and hand-rubbed, high-gloss piano-black finish lend a sense of timelessness to its visual aspect. Classic Three's are sold and packaged individually as left or right side speakers. Included are 2-piece BMC formed stabilizer wings with threaded inserts for included carpet spikes. Rubber pads are included for hard flooring.

Adding a Subwoofer: The Classic Four is a full range speaker making a subwoofer completely optional. Adding a NHT Classic series subwoofer to a pair of Classic Fours will however allow the Fours to have application flexibility. For example, Fours can be ran solo, full-range for excellent stereo music performance while allowing separate subwoofer(s) to improve system dynamics and lower total system distortion in a home theater system to levels usually associated with amplifier specifications. If you are considering a subwoofer, we recommend one or two Classic B-12d's as the perfect match followed by one or two Classic B-10d.

Mixing and Matching: Building a home theater system? All NHT speakers are designed and voiced with the same design goals so you have the freedom to use any of our Classic Series center channel speaker. That said, corner us in a dark bar and well likely recommend the Classic ThreeC center channel speaker as the perfect match followed closely by the Classic TwoC. Rear speakers? Again, a perfect match would be floor or wall mounted Classic Threes for surround and back channels but many people may opt for the Classic Absolute Zero's in Black or White because of their compact size (or a combination of both).

The Company: Let’s not forget that you’re buying NHT speakers and that means all sorts of things. It means you care about getting the best speaker value for your hard earned money. It means and you care about quality craftsmanship and high-end performance. It means you’re ready to join our family of fanatics who love music, movies and the best gear that produces them. Paradigm SHIFT E3m Earbuds Review

I’ve enjoyed Paradigm products for a number of years now. The Canadian loudspeaker company is well known for producing a wide variety of products across most price points. They make everything from 5.1 mini systems, like the Millenia System to mid priced home theater speakers in the Monitor Series, and reference level, no compromise two channel floor standers.

Paradigm recently moved into one category for which they were not previously known: headphones. Paradigm's SHIFT series has a host of newly designed products, including powered monitors  headphones, and three different earbuds. I received for review a set of the SHIFT E3m earbuds. The E3m is the top of the line among three separate models, all priced according to bass performance. E3m’s are $130 retail.

E3m earbuds feature an airtight seal for noise isolation, a tangle-resistant 1.2 meter cord, and an in-line remote and microphone for use with mobile phones or computers. Supplied with E3m’s are three sets of ear tips and a padded travel case for protection. They are equipped with 8mm super neodymium drivers and a stated frequency response of 8hz to 19kHz. The connectors and earpiece are precision machined from aluminum and give one confidence in their durability.

Paradigm has its own audio research and development facility, with a 36,000 cubic foot anechoic chamber. Paradigm also has multiple double-blind listening rooms used to test every product. Specifically for earbuds and personal audio products, Paradigm SHIFT uses a head and torso “manikin” that acts as a human simulator, measuring the sonic performance while helping with ergonomic design and frequency response adjustments. SHIFT earbuds and are “critically” tuned to Paradigm’s three main speaker lines, the Monitor, Studio, and Signature series products. All three SHIFT earbud models are available in black and white finishes. My review sample was supplied in black.

I must say upfront that I have never been fond of in ear buds and I have always used traditional headphones or portable models with ear hooks. I simply could never get earbuds to stay in properly and have always been underwhelmed by the sound, which tended to be thin. The SHIFT in ear buds are the first such products that I have had no issue with. They fit perfectly, did not come out at any point, and never got tangled up. Since I generally use headphones exclusively for the gym and occasionally while traveling, this is a major plus. E3m’s were very comfortable and I barely noticed they were in my ear, and they were totally unobtrusive.

How did they sound? In a word, terrific. I would characterize their overall sound as a bit on the warmish side. High frequencies were mellow, midrange textures were supple, and bass was weighty and articulate. I happen to have a preference for a slightly darker tone on headphones. Shrill, tinny sounding cans are just not my cup of tea, and easily become very irritating after a short while. No such issues here with the E3m’s. These earbuds were also very easy to drive, with plenty of usable volume range. Even the quietest portable devices should have no problem

I used the E3m’s on my Apple iPod Nano and really enjoyed the plush sound across all genres of music, including alternative, jazz, classic rock, world, and R&B. I thought imaging was excellent, and at certain points I had forgotten I was even listening to earbuds, as there was the illusion of three-dimensional sound on well-recorded material. There was also very good insulation from outside noise. These are not active noise cancelling earbuds per se, but they were great at not letting competing ambient noise in.

My wife used the E3m’s on her iPhone 4S for music and phone calls. She concurred with me about fit, ergonomics, and sound quality. On phone calls, the built in microphone proved to be very good indeed. Obviously a lot of engineering went into the E3m’s performance and the microphone and volume control are not just tacked on features.

Conclusion:

Paradigm has accomplished developing a great sounding product that is well built and ergonomically impressive. I must admit that the overall warmish sound may not appeal to all, but I made it clear that I lean that way for headphone listening, especially for portable devices. Bass was clearly the E3m’s strong suit; its rendering of the lower frequencies provided excellent body to the music.

E3m’s also lived up to their billing as tangle free and great fitting. The volume control and microphone worked flawlessly, and the earbuds themselves and the connectors were well above average in build. E3m’s are not geared towards the cheapo market. However, their performance is in line with, or even surpasses, headphones and earbuds I have owned costing the same and even much more. If you are shopping for an upgrade to the crummy earbuds that come with your iDevice, put the Paradigm SHIFT series at the top of your list. by Andre Marc

Atlantic Technology Demonstrates H-PAS PowerBar 235

Atlantic Technology is providing live demonstrations of their new soundbar, the H-PAS PowerBar 235. As folks following the wildly popular soundbar category know, these slim, convenient speaker boxes generally need to be paired with an outboard subwoofer in order to achieve full-range audio reproduction for movies and music. But with just the single box, the PowerBar 235 hits deep bass notes down to a tooth-rattling 47 Hz. At the same time, it offers lower levels of harmonic distortion than the competition, which is a boon to dialogue in particular.

The "H-PAS" name is deference to Atlantic Technology's "Hybrid Pressure Acceleration System" design algorithms which are essential to the soundbar's performance. The secret here is the proprietary internal layout of chambers, galleries, traps, and vents which channel the sound generated by the rear sides of the two small woofers. The results of this patented solution is a sound that can be compared to bigger, more elaborate speaker systems. H-PAS speaker designs can also be run full -power without the high levels of distortion of large-diameter woofers, according to the manufacturer.

Reverse angle: Above the mostly-sheer rear end of the PowerBar 235 is a dense, generous jack pack.

The all-in-one H-PAS PowerBar 235 is a powered (80 total watts RMS) two-channel system that can be wall-mounted beneath a video display. If inverted for shelf mounting above the TV, the control panel display can be electronically rotated for correct view in either configuration, a nifty trick. Alternate display labels are also provided for both contingencies. While offering enjoyable, unprocessed stereo, it also contains its own digital signal processing with Dolby Digital and DTS decoding to render a three- or five-channel illusion. One coaxial and two optical digital inputs are provided, a rear RCA stereo input, front mini-jacks to patch in a portable audio player, and yes, a subwoofer output if you really need to dust the ceiling.

it's plenty room-filling for a small-to-medium-sized room. Atlantic Technology was running demos of the H-PAS PowerBar 235 on the show floor at the CEA Line shows and, sure enough, despite the high levels of crowd noise and competing loudspeaker auditions, this single dude put out a powerful full-range sound. It will arrive at retail this September, with a suggested price of $899.by chris chiarella

Onkyo to deliver 11.4 DTS Neo:X surround sound

Onkyo to deliver 114 DTS NeoX surround sound on latest receivers
While still a far cry from 64 speakers, Onkyo and DTS teamed up to bring the first 11.4 channel surround sound to your home theater. At the top of the trio of new receivers is the TX-NR5010. It is the only one that's THX certified, but like the TX-NR3010, it can drive 9 speakers and has pre-outs for four subs as well as two more channels. $2999 is the price you'll pay, with a $700 price break when you move one model down the line to the TX-NR3010. Last up, but still shipping in July with 11.4 support, is the TX-NR1010 with its seven channel amp at $1799. DTS Neo:X is the name of the up-mix technology that uses a single algorithm to take anything from a 2.0 signal to 11.1 and converts it to 11.4. The other first here is Cisco Linksys SimpleTap -- also coming to the entire 2012 Onkyo lineup of network receivers via a firmware update -- which promises to deliver a simpler network setup.by ben drawbaugh
